That improvement may be completely genuine.

The Question That Matters

Did electrical contact with the Earth cause the change, or did morning light, movement, aromatic plants, quiet, focused attention, and a break from your phone all contribute?

Criterion 1: Does Grounding Add a Specific Benefit?

Grounding should outperform an otherwise similar experience involving the same garden, daylight, movement, duration, attention, and expectations.

Comparing a barefoot walk outside with sitting indoors changes too many things at once.

Criterion 2: Are the Studies Strong Enough?

Strong evidence should include:

That difference matters once a simple outdoor routine becomes an expensive shopping list.

What Grounding Is and What It Is Not

Grounding, also called earthing, involves conductive contact intended to connect your body electrically with the Earth.

Common Forms of Grounding

  • Walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand
  • Sitting or lying directly on the ground
  • Gardening with bare hands
  • Using grounding mats, sheets, patches, socks, or shoes
  • Connecting a product to a ground rod or grounded outlet

Important Distinction

Electrical grounding also has an established engineering meaning. It provides a conductive path to Earth for electrical systems and equipment, helping control dangerous voltages and fault currents.[1]

Earthing Versus Psychological Grounding

Psychological grounding is a separate practice.

It uses breathing, counting, naming visible objects, or noticing physical sensations to bring attention back to the present during anxiety or emotional distress.

A barefoot garden walk may involve psychological grounding, sensory nature exposure, and electrical earthing at the same time. Evidence for present-moment attention does not prove that Earth-derived electrons reduce inflammation or cure insomnia.

This claim forms the foundation beneath nearly every grounding benefit.

Criteria

A changed electrical reading should lead to meaningful, repeatable health improvements that outperform a believable inactive comparison.

Conductive contact can change your body’s electrical potential relative to its surroundings. Grounding literature then proposes that Earth-derived electrons enter the body, act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, and improve a wide range of conditions.[2]

How Strong Is the Grounding Research Base?

The grounding literature includes theoretical papers, case reports, thermal images, physiological measurements, small uncontrolled experiments, and a limited number of controlled human trials.

These forms of evidence do not carry equal weight.

Commercial Connections Matter

A frequently cited 2015 review proposed that grounding could influence inflammation, immune responses, wound healing, and chronic inflammatory conditions.

Its disclosure stated that Gaétan Chevalier and James Oschman were EarthFx contractors who owned a small percentage of shares in the company, while Richard Brown was also an EarthFx contractor.[2]

What the 2025 Pilot Did

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot published in 2025 assigned 60 eligible participants by computer randomization to a grounding mat or a non-grounding control mat.

What the Researchers Measured

Earlier Sleep Research

An earlier study followed 12 people with complaints involving sleep, pain, and stress. Participants used conductive mattress pads for eight weeks, and researchers reported cortisol changes and subjective improvements.

The study lacked a parallel control group, making it unsuitable for establishing treatment effectiveness.[4]

Verdict

Promising but preliminary. Grounding deserves further sleep research, but current evidence is not strong enough to call it an established insomnia treatment.

Practical Takeaway

Persistent insomnia, loud snoring, breathing pauses, or severe daytime sleepiness deserve proper medical assessment.

Claim 3: Grounding Reduces Stress and Normalizes Cortisol

Feeling calmer in the garden is believable. Proving that electrical contact normalized a stress hormone is much harder.

Grounding should outperform an identical relaxation or outdoor routine on meaningful stress outcomes.

The Cortisol Evidence

The 12-person study reported changes in nighttime cortisol and subjective improvements. Its lack of a parallel control group leaves expectation, natural variation, and other behavioral changes unresolved.[4]

The Stress Questionnaire Result

The 2025 sleep pilot reported significant improvement in the grounding group’s stress score compared with its own baseline.

The abstract does not establish that the stress score was significantly better than the control group at the end of treatment.[3]

Pain relief should be clinically meaningful, greater than placebo or ordinary rest, repeated in larger groups, and sustained over time.

What the Small Trial Reported

A six-week randomized trial involving 16 massage therapists reported increased physical function and energy and reductions in fatigue, depressed mood, tiredness, and pain during grounded periods compared with ungrounded periods.[5]

Why That Is Not Enough

  • Only 16 people participated.
  • They came from one narrow occupational group.
  • Many outcomes were self-reported.
  • Temporary comfort does not prove that the underlying condition improved.

Rest, increased attention, study participation, and expectations may all influence pain ratings.

Verdict

Weak evidence. Some people may feel more comfortable after grounding, but it is not established treatment for chronic pain, arthritis, injury, or exercise recovery.

Claim 5: Grounding Treats Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the most persuasive words in wellness marketing because it can be connected to almost every health problem.

Why Thermal Images Are Not Enough

Thermal images can vary with room temperature, recent movement, blood flow, skin exposure, camera settings, and natural variation.

They do not diagnose systemic inflammation.

Claim 7: Grounding Improves Blood Pressure or Thins the Blood

These claims deserve extra caution because they could influence medication decisions.

Cardiovascular claims require adequately powered randomized trials, consistent measurements, medication tracking, adverse-event reporting, independent replication, and meaningful clinical outcomes.

What Has Been Studied

Small grounding studies and reviews have discussed blood viscosity, blood flow, heart-rate variability, and blood pressure.

The 16-person massage-therapist paper also refers to earlier results from the trial involving inflammatory biomarkers, blood viscosity, and heart-rate variability.[5]

Why the Claim Is High Risk

Those findings are too limited to guide treatment or establish that grounding prevents cardiovascular events.

A change in one physiological measurement does not prove that blood has been safely “thinned” or that cardiovascular risk has fallen.

Other Grounding Claims Reviewed

A temporary change may be worth studying. It does not prove that the autonomic nervous system was reset or healed.

Does Grounding Balance Hormones or Thyroid Function?

Hormone levels vary with time of day, medication, food, stress, sleep, illness, and laboratory conditions.

No robust clinical trials establish grounding as treatment for a thyroid or hormone disorder.

Never adjust thyroid medicine or hormonal treatment because of a grounding product or home experiment.

Can Grounding Treat Chronic or Autoimmune Disease?

Does Grounding Protect You From EMFs?

A body-voltage demonstration can show that electrical conditions changed when someone became grounded.
