(All less
than 30 km from DNA Gardens!) DNA Gardens is a delightful part of
the world and here are some of the local places we enjoy.

Dry Island Buffalo
Jump Provincial Park is well worth a
visit. It is so named for the unusual land formation; a flat-topped mesa
called a "dry island" rises 200 metres above the Red Deer river. This is
a natural reserve of forest, canyon and mesas. While hiking at the park,
keep an eye out for crocuses, yellow violets, buttercups, shooting stars,
western wood lily and cactus flowers. There is still plenty to see once
"Flower season" is over (late July). You can view the hoodoos at Devil’s
Gate. Bird watchers can spot eagles, pelicans, turkey vultures, hawks,
tree swallows, and blue birds.
Only 22 km from DNA +++++ Nature
lovers should check out the
Trochu Arboretum and Gardens.
Over 1000 native and non-native trees and shrubs line red shale walking
paths. Over 100 species of trees and shrubs, colorful floral displays,
and a wide variety of birds in the area make a natural adventure of an
afternoon.

McKenzie Crossing
is nestled in the trees, west of Big Valley on the Red Deer River.
McKenzie is a wonderful camping experience that offers power and water
hook ups. There is plenty of open area for groups, as well as fire pits,
tables and a group kitchen area. This campground is a favorite with
nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its diverse terrain has been the
locale for international orienteering meets, Big Valley's covered wagon
trek and other events. The town of Big Valley runs this little campground
and sometimes it is open and sometimes it is not. This is a lovely
spot but it is not reliable for being open. Check with the village of Big
Valley if making plans.
Only 15 km from DNA +++++ Trenville Park
is located beside Red Deer River. What a dramatic, remote view of the Red
Deer River badlands. This is a less traveled local favourite. Trenville
Park offers excellent fishing and a great family environment. Keep
your eyes looking for the fossils of petrified wood and dinosaurs.
There are even buffalo heads down there! Amenities
include caretaker, day-use area,
fire pits, firewood at charge, horseshoe pits, playgrounds and swimming.
This is well signed from Hiway 590.
Only 27 km from DNA +++++
Tolman Bridge
This is another scenic crossing located on the Red Deer River.
Camping but no services. General amenities include day-use area,
firepits, free firewood, swimming area, water-pump. Boating, fishing, camp
kitchen, picnic tables and playground on site.

unserviced area. Amenities include washrooms with showers, day-use area,
sani-dump, shelter, ball diamonds, bike trails, and playground.
Only 9 km from DNA +++++
Buffalo Rock Golf Course
For a relaxed, scenic round of golf, this is the place. Conveniently
located on Hiway 21 and the Elnora Access Road. Check out the "real" rock
the buffaloes used to scratch on; hence the name, Buffalo Rock.
Only 21 km from DNA +++++
Fawn Meadows Golf Club & Campground The
campground is nestled in mature trees and offers 15A Power and Water. The
signature hole is #7, a par 3 with a large water feature in play and a
beautifully flowering "Fawn Meadows" sign.
Only 30 km from DNA +++++
Pine Lake
is a well known resort area
DNA Gardens!
Gift shopping, ice-cream and light lunch of fruit pies and cherry
sausages. Great ambiance and of course, great fruit and plants.
