What are those royalties all
about?
These monies are collected and submitted back to the various
plant breeders so that they can continue their great work.
In the case of the haskaps and the cherries, these funds are
paid directly to the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Bob
Bors and Rick Sawatski and other dedicated individuals at the
University keep the breeding work proceeding. However,
they also help develop cultural practices and techniques for
optimum growing and provide extension work. It is a hard
pill to swallow at times, but trust me, this helps make the
commercial plant industry self fulfilling. The black
currants are submitted to Mylnefield Research Station in
Scotland, some to The Ontario Berry Growers Association and some
to COPF (Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation).
