At Long Last - A Complete Nutritional Analysis of Saskatoon Fruit

The Saskatchewan Fruit Growers’ Association recently obtained funding to have a complete nutritional analysis of saskatoon fruit made. Little information on the nutritional value of saskatoon fruit has been available, and this information has been very incomplete. The table below contains values for the water, energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin and mineral content of saskatoon fruit. These values may be used by processors for product labels, by consumers who would like such information, and by the industry, for comparison of saskatoon fruit to other fruits.

Because of the expense of the nutritional analyses, only samples of the cultivar Smoky were analysed. It was important to have fruit samples of one cultivar from at least three different orchards analysed in order to obtain values that were realistic (that is to say, truly representative of saskatoon fruit). Cultivar trials conducted by the Native Fruit Development Program at the University of Saskatchewan have indicated that orchard location has a substantial effect on saskatoon growth, development and fruit quality, and that differences associated with location can override any differences associated with cultivar. It’s unlikely that values for nutritional content for the other commercially important cultivars, such as Northline or Thiessen, will differ substantially.
