Bruno Cherry Festival |
|
Where the heck is Bruno, Saskatchewan? The second annual Bruno Cherry Festival was held August 14
and 15th, 2004. The
event was well attended by about 1600 individuals.
Just for the record, Bruno is a small town of about 600 residents
situated slightly north east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
What great fun and what a strong educational component. The University of Saskatchewan helped organize and classes were well received. Hour long sessions ran through out the 2 days in the Lecture hall on Starting on Orchard by Dr. Bob Bors (Uof S), Fruit Processing Research by Linda Matthews (UofS), Starting your own business, Growing Sour cherries by Dr. Bob Bors. Several sessions had question and answer periods fielded by Dr. Bob and Clarence Peters SAFRR from Regina. In another part of the building, Shona Pearson, Executive Chef from the U of S faculty club entertained folks. She made interesting recipes utilizing the U of S cherries while making them at the same time. Needless to say, the crowd really enjoyed the sampling portion. Shona was overheard to comment, “My God these cherries are good!” Shona made chocolate bark with U of S cherries, Dessert crepes with Belgium chocolate and U of S cherries and a savory salad of watermelon, celery and U of S cherries. Out in the orchard of cherries, courses on budding and grafting were given. Orchard tours and black plastic mulch displays were also conducted. Cherry sausages were on sale at the west end of the Prairie
Ursinline Center. In the gymnasium, samples of ice-cream Sundaes utilizing Saskatchewan grown fruit was disappearing quickly. In fact, they ran short! Pie made from the cherries was also consumed with great gusto. A trade show surrounded the eatery and a live band made the day very enjoyable. The whole occasion took place at the former convent
in Bruno. Strangers traveled from all over the place to Bruno. Karl Daher traveled with his wife, Tanya from Stonewall, Manitoba just to take in the cherry festival. He read about the cherries and the festival in Gardener for the Prairies and had to check it out for himself. He said, “I was really impressed with the cherry fruit size and sweetness, just right with a little bit of tartness. The festival was wonderful. I really enjoyed it. It was great to see so many people excited about these cherries and their potential!” Written by Arden Delidais |
